“Good Morning America” anchor Robin Roberts officially came out of the closet via a Facebook post Sunday afternoon.

It’s not like Robin was doing a lot to try to convince America she was a woman of the penis-loving variety, but she finally makes it clear for those Middle Americans in denial. She writes, “I am grateful to God, my doctors and nurses for my restored good health. I am grateful for my sister, Sally-Ann, for being my donor and giving me the gift of life. I am grateful for my entire family, my long time girlfriend, Amber, and friends as we prepare to celebrate a glorious new year together.”

We would welcome Robin to the gay club, but it’s not like she hasn’t been in it for years. It’s easy to appreciate someone’s desire for privacy, but Robin’s active avoidance is a bit off-putting. She doesn’t say much about girlfriend Amber Laign. We’re not asking for intimate details, but showing a little warmth to the woman would be nice.

There’s always a lot of debate about the importance of visibility. Robin Roberts never projected a heterosexual image of herself, but not speaking up for so long does make it seem like she was ashamed or scared. It’s understandable if she was concerned of the impact it would have on her career, but being so blasé about it now doesn’t send a strong and proud image to the world.

Just the same, better late than never. Cheers Robin!
