Dick Pound, Canadian member of the International Olympic Committee says that Russia’s anti-gay, “anti-propaganda” law isn’t nearly as bad as laws in other countries such as Malaysia or Nigeria where you might be put to death.
He told Metro that he thinks the media’s heightened interest in potential terrorist activities at the Sochi Winter Olympic Games suggests that interest in the “homosexual issue” has waned because “it’s not drawing the kind of attention they wanted.”
“Not that I approve of the law” he said, “but putting it on a scale of 1-10 of odious laws, it’s not way up near 10.”
Mr. Pound also claimed that much of the anti-Russia activity surrounding the anti-gay law “emanates” from the United States, “so whose ox is getting gored here?”
Using the same logic, of course, we could argue that the Polar Vortex “emanates” from Canada, but it would be wrong — international boundaries are as artificial as a rating system for discriminatory homophobic laws, n’est ce pas?
Principle 6 of the Olympic Charter:
Any form of discrimination with regard to a country or a person on grounds of race, religion, politics, gender or otherwise is incompatible with belonging to the Olympic Movement.
